7 Ways to Make Money with Canva

Do you enjoy working with Canva? Whether you want to start a Canva side hustle or you want to use Canva to make a full-time income, this post can help you get started.

Most bloggers and content creators are probably familiar with Canva for graphic design, but few realize how many ways this fun graphic design tool can help you earn a living.

Canva isn't just for social graphics; it also allows you to create over 30 different pre-sized templates for everything from print design to presentations. And many graphic designers, including myself, are quickly migrating to Canva to meet all of their design needs.

  • Canva can help you create graphics for your blog and social media.

This is how I first became acquainted with Canva. I was still using the Adobe suite, but creating social media graphics was a nightmare. I couldn't find the files I needed, and my seemingly limitless "inspiration" library never made it into my work.

Aside from being disorganized, my old computer was simply *too slow*. So I tried Canva and discovered that, WOW, I could design faster using their templates and then simply resize a design to fit different platforms.

Adobe is working on several different apps, and while you can design everything in a single app, nothing is ideal. In Illustrator, you must use separate artboards for each page. InDesign works in pages, but you have to resize entire documents or create different versions for different purposes, and Adobe Spark integrates with your library, but it runs too slowly and buggy for me.

Not to mention asset management and the need to purchase additional stock graphics and photos!

Even for free users, Canva includes millions of royalty-free elements and templates, and their Pro plans take this to the next level, especially with the addition of Creator templates from independent designers and designer templates available on other marketplaces.

  • Canva can be used for client work.

Some people wonder if you can use Canva for client work, and the answer is both yes and no.

Canva is used by many (if not most?) social media managers to create graphics for their clients.

I used Canva to supplement my workflow when designing brands and websites, but I never used it for anything else. For example, I created vector graphics and logos in Adobe products, but the presentation was created in Canva because Canva Present is awesome. I could also use the app to record live presentations.

Canva, on the other hand, has some features that make it ideal for client work, such as the recently released ability to create multiple brand kits. You can manage multiple clients or products at the same time with this feature!

Canva really shines for client work when you need to create designs that the client will want to edit themselves later on. Alternatively, you should at least give them the option to edit their own designs later so that you can avoid unnecessary back-and-forth.

Canva, in this case, can make your job as a service-based designer much easier!

  • Create and resell Canva templates.

Selling Canva templates is a great way to generate passive income, and some people make a living off of it.

At the height of the pandemic in 2020, I made the switch to full-time Canva template design. I had already been selling a few in my shops, but I also began working as a Canva Creator, which allowed me to sell Canva templates on their platform and earn the majority of my income.

  • Canva is a great place to sell your artwork.

Did you know you can sell your own graphics and photographs on Canva? That's correct!

Do you know about Canva's Elements tab, which is a bottomless well of graphics? Your photos and artwork can also be included, and you can earn money every time someone downloads a template that includes your graphics.

This is done through Canva's Creators program, and it's a great way to start earning passive income with all of those unused illustrations and cast-off client assets you have stashed away in folders.

  • Canva allows you to create print-on-demand products.

Yes, you can use Canva to create print-on-demand products such as journals, t-shirts, tote bags, and more... with a few exceptions

I understand there is a lot of confusion surrounding POD because Canva's license terms can be perplexing (who isn't, right?), but from what I understand, you can create designs using their platform's graphics and photos and then upload those flattened designs to another platform to sell as POD products.

  • As a Canva affiliate, you can earn money.

So, I believe we've covered a lot of great ways to make money with Canva, but there's one more way I'd like to introduce you to in this post: becoming a Canva Affiliate.

Many bloggers and content creators monetize their work through affiliate marketing. It's a type of sponsorship arrangement in which the affiliate is compensated for educating or promoting a brand and earns commissions when someone buys based on their recommendations.

  • Teach others how to use Canva.

Teaching others how to use Canva is another way to generate passive income. I started doing this on YouTube and in my courses because, no matter how simple it appears, many people don't know how to get the most out of it.

This is especially true for people who aren't designers and aren't familiar with the process of planning and customizing graphics so they don't look like random templates.

Canva does have its own Design school with bite-sized, well-produced lessons, but there are so many other topics centered on content creation and Canva's numerous features that you can teach.
